LEISURE

For many people in Lamesa, Friday or Saturday night isn’t complete without a trip to one of Lamesa’s two movie theaters. Both theaters have a long history in Lamesa and a story to tell today’s visitors.

Sky-Vue Drive In Theater

One of Texas’ few remaining Drive-In theaters, Lamesa’s Sky-Vue Drive In Theater has been delighting audiences with first –run flicks for more than 55 years. Driving through the pay window, you’re not as likely to forget where you are as WHEN you are. For generations of Lamesa residents, a visit to the Sky-Vue is a walk down memory lane. Remember when’s are around every corner where memories flood back of special friends and summer loves. But for the young moviegoers of today, the Sky-Vue is a glimpse of Americana, something only seen on another big-screen in “American Graffiti.” Nostalgia calls from every corner of the snack bar and the playground where little has changed in five decades. Great-Grandchildren now play on the same equipment where their Nana and Papa first held hands on the swing. It’s a legacy that Lamesa now shares with sold-out crowds of people who come from far and wide every weekend to experience a far-out time while watching first-run movies. Sam and Carolyn Kirkland, owners of the Sky-Vue for more than 22 years, invite you to join them every weekend all year around at dark for first-run movies. Don’t forget to try the Chihuahua. It’s a must have to complete the Sky-Vue experience.

Tickets $4/ person For information call 806-872-7004.

Lamesa’s MovieLand Theater

At one time in Lamesa’s history, this town was teeming with movie theaters. As many as 5 walk-in movie theaters were operating at one time. Over the years the walk-in theaters on the square closed and the only walk-in remaining was the Noret Theater, owned by Skeet Noret, founder of the Sky-Vue Drive In. But in the last half of the 1990’s that theater unfortunately closed as well. There was a true void felt in the community, especially among the young teens, pre-driving age who relied on the theater for a Friday night hang-out.

Early summer, 2001, Don Stribling met with Girl Scout 43 and decided to launch a community wide effort to renovate, reopen and run the old Noret theater as a non-profit movie theater. Girl Scout Troop 43 was proposing this effort as their Gold Award project. The theater was graciously donated by Noret to the community and support was staggering for this endeavor. The initial goal was to get at least 150 members to donate $15.00 each. However, after only three days of advertising from the Lamesa Press Reporter and local radio station, KPET, more than 300 members stepped forward to invest in this dream.

The following week Troop 43, along with other dedicated volunteers representing the newly formed “Friends of Movieland” non-profit organization, started cleaning and renovating the building working tirelessly to open the theatre for the big labor day movie weekend.

Today, this theater is still operating as a labor of love for the cast of more than 100 volunteers who give so much of their time to keep the theater and snack bar staffed. Friday night is packed with middle school kids who never miss a show. Parents are grateful that these students have their own special place to go. Movieland Theater also operates a summer movie series for children. Ten dollars buys ten tickets for an entire summer of entertainment. Lamesa’s Movieland Theater is the only non-profit first run theatre in Texas. The show goes on every day except Monday. Call 872-2750 for listing and show times. Tickets are $4.00/person.
